Warning:
Your mother may not
approve...
“When you’re a teenager or
in your twenties or thirties, you can wear just about
anything and get away with it,” my mother once told
me. “But
once you hit 40, it’s time to step aside, cover up,
and let the younger generation enjoy their time in
the spotlight. That’s the secret
to aging gracefully.”
Just thinking about that
conversation now makes me chuckle.
| Yes, those
were
the rules once upon a time. Back in the
days when the main reason many women
went to college was to find a husband,
and the only three careers open to women
were secretary, teacher, or nurse, women
apparently came with some sort of
expiration date that rendered them “old”
upon their 40th
birthday. Hollywood in particular
was blatantly guilty of this, often
shunting aside older actresses to pair
their former leading men with starlets
half their age. No wonder so many
women hated to turn the "Big
4-0!" |
|
As times and attitudes
changed – albeit slowly -- those old dressing
guidelines now seem as distant as dime stores and
$25,000 mortgages. The reality is that
no one
looks good in everything,
regardless of her age. Everyone has her
best and worst styles and age – and/or a terrific
figure – doesn’t change that.
But there are definitely
some styles that work better on younger women and
some that work better on more mature
bodies.
The trick is in learning which is which and when it’s
right to make the transition. Get it right, and
you’ll look years or decades younger than you
are. Get
it wrong, and you’ll look years or decades older – even if
you’re still in your 20’s.
So how do you know which
is which? And when should you
trade one for the other?
It can be a difficult
call.
Fashion magazines often
run features about dressing well at any age with
pictures that show what women in their 30’s, 40’s,
and 50’s+ should wear. But they often do
it using clothes with no models or slim models in
their 20’s. It’s kind of hard
to relate.
Then we hear stuff like
“40 is the new 30” and “60 is the new 40,” but what
does that mean in terms of clothing? Does it mean that
we can wear miniskirts and cropped tops until
sometime after menopause? Should we still
embrace every trend like a teenager? Should mothers and
daughters shop together in the same store?
Not exactly.
For while our attitudes
toward aging may have changed, our bodies haven’t
necessarily followed suit. We may look younger
than our mothers did at our age – or not – but we
can’t always fool “Mother Nature.” Gray hair and
wrinkles still appear. We lose muscle
tone.
Gravity takes its toll.
The difference is that
where our mothers may have accepted these changes and
resigned themselves to matronly styles for the rest
of their lives, baby boomers and their daughters
refuse to follow suit. Women born after
WWII enjoy a higher level of education, employment,
and income than their grandmothers could have ever
imagined, and they’re not about to let pesky little
things like gray hair and cellulite slow them
down.
So what’s the trick to
dressing your age?
An Age-Defying
Solution
It’s really quite simple,
once you know what to look for. Once you understand
the true power of clothing, you begin to see how you
can use your clothes to create all sorts of illusions
to look:
-
Younger or
older
- Thinner or
heavier
- Taller or
shorter
- More modern, less
dated
- Softer or more
powerful
- …or whatever you
like.
